Information for Successful Recruiting

The need for blood in your community:

  • 550 units of blood are needed every week to meet the needs of our local hospitals.
  • Only 5% of the population donates blood.
  • 8 out of 10 of us will require blood or blood products in our lifetime.
  • Much of today's medical care depends upon steady, safe supply of blood from healthy volunteer donors.

The donation process:

  • Donating blood takes about 25 to 30 minutes. 5 to 10 to interview, 5 to 10 to donate and a few minutes to refresh following donation.
  • The interview process includes a mini physical and medical history

Some blood facts!:

  • One unit of blood can be separated into several components (red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets
  • We need to collect blood each and every day. Red blood cells have a shelf life of 42 days, platelets must be used within 5 days and plasma can be stored up to one year if frozen.
  • Accident victims may require from 50 to 100 units of blood during their course of treatment.
  • Cancer, trauma and surgery patients require transfusions to survive.
  • You will SAVE lives be donating blood!

Invite them to donate blood:

  • The primary reason people don't donate, "They have never been asked."
  • We all fear the unknown, non-donors are often afraid the procedure will hurt.
  • Assure the individual that the donation experience is safe and simple and will save lives.
  • If someone emphatically turns you down, respect that.

Remind your donors:

A friendly reminder shortly before the drive will help your attendance.

This is a good time to remind them to eat a hearty meal before donating and bring an ID with them.

Thank your donors:

  • You may choose to recognize the new donors or donors meeting a gallon donation.
