Watertown, SD- Watertown Police and Fire Departments will compete to see which department can recruit the most blood donors for the community’s blood supply during the holidays in the 11th Annual “Heroes Behind the Badges.”
This unique and fun competition between the two departments will be held on Thursday, December 20 from 11:00am to 7:00pm and Friday, December 21 from 7:00am to 3:30pm. The public is encouraged to designate their blood donation in honor of the department of their choice. The first 300 people to donate blood will receive a $5 Beef Bucks, compliments of Coteau Hills Cattlemen, Watertown HyVee, and County Fair Food Store.
The department with the most donations will receive the traveling trophy and bragging rights for the year. To add to the enjoyment of the event, join KWAT live on Friday morning to donate blood and receive special coffee and cinnamon rolls, (compliments of Prairie Lakes Healthcare System).
“This annual event is scheduled during a key time in help improve the blood supply just prior to the Christmas holiday weekend. This year will be very important to ensure the availability of blood due to a four day weekend for most people and no way to collect blood during the holiday weekend,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “We are currently in high need for blood due to a drastic decrease in blood donations by 18% primarily due to a strong cold and flu season. This challenge between the two departments provides the public a chance to say “thank you” to the police and fire personnel and make a significant impact in many lives.”
Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form), weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health. It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood. Please bring an ID with you at the time of donation.
